A countdown has begun for NATO's massive military exercise in the Baltic Sea, stretching between Denmark and Lithuania. It was reported that a total of 14 NATO nations, including Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States will participate, Kirby said. Additionally, NATO partner nations Finland and Sweden will also participate this year — both nations have recently applied to join NATO. Also a total of 45 ships, at least 75 planes and about 7 military personnel will serve. NATO is preparing to conduct a drill in the Baltic Sea, with dozens of warships, fighter planes and 7 troops from several countries. Baltic operations 22 (BALTOPS22) will be held on 5-17 June, the 51 th of the naval exercise, according to a statement from NATO. In the exercise, aimed at strengthening the facilities necessary to protect the freedom of navigation and security of the Baltic region, amphibious operations, shooting techniques, operations against submarines, air defense maneuvers, there will be work on a variety of topics, including mine removal, explosive disposal, drones and medical interventions. Sweden will host the BALTOPS22 regular annual exercises, which were first conducted in 1972 and will be hosted this year.
As in previous iterations of BALTOPS, maritime and air forces will work together to exercise medical evacuation, joint personnel recovery, air defense, maritime interdiction operations, anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures and amphibious operations, to strengthen the cohesion and capabilities of NATO allies and partners. This year's BALTOPS exercise is led by U.S. Sixth Fleet and will be executed by Striking Forces NATO.
