A new kind of society is being built amidst the ruins of the Syrian Civil War, but it's not what you'd expect. The people of northern Syria's Kurdish-majority region of Rojava are one of the most radically progressive societies on the planet today through direct democracy, women's liberation, ethnic harmony, and ecology. This system of 'democratic confederalism' is inspired by the ideas of Abdullah Öcalan, the leading figure of the Kurdish liberation struggle. Known as 'Kurdish Mandela', he has been imprisoned by the Turkish state on the Imrali Island since 1999.
Havin Guneser is a Kurdish writer, journalist, women’s rights activist, and a spokesperson for the International Initiative: "Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan--Peace in Kurdistan". She is also a translator and publisher of the works of Abdullah Öcalan, a leading figure of the Kurdish liberation struggle, who has been imprisoned by the Turkish state on Imrali Island since 1999. Under her leadership, her organisation started a petition for Öcalan's freedom that would collect 10.3 million signatures. Every two years she organises the conference 'Challenging Capitalist Modernity: Network for an Alternative Quest', gathering a thousand Kurdish and non-Kurdish radical intellectuals from across Europe, like David Harvey, David Graeber, and John Holloway.
