Have you been wanting to visit Utah but aren’t sure if you can handle all the crowds of the Big 5 National Parks?
If that is the case, you need to check out the Escalante - Grand Staircase National Monument, spanning from Kanab up to Escalante, Utah.
We drove straight to Escalante from Bryce Canyon and were not sure what to expect.
The monument is massive and spread out, and there is so much to see!
We started at the Visitors’ Center in Escalante to get the Junior Ranger booklets and the information on where to even begin with our littles!
Our first hike was the Lower Calf Creek Falls Trail. It was beautiful without too many other people around. There is also a campground here that we would love to come back to
and stay at for a longer period! We didn’t make it to the waterfall (toddlers, ya know?), but we still LOVED this hike!
From Lower Calf Creek Falls, we headed to Long Canyon Slot just east of Boulder, Utah. This is the perfect slot canyon for beginner hikers or families with small children.
The approach to the canyon is very short, and the whole hike is about ¼ mile long with no real elevation gains.
The area is desolate, wild, and without cell service. COME PREPARED.
When we were leaving the slot canyon, we had to decide whether we wanted to backtrack 12 miles to Boulder, Utah, and get on the highway home OR if we wanted to keep driving
down this GORGEOUS road with ZERO CELL SERVICE based on what we were seeing on a physical map.
The Burr Scenic Backways is BY FAR one of the MOST SCENIC DRIVES IN THE USA and gives you a real glimpse of how vast and wild Utah is.
We had no real way of knowing how long it would take to get from Long Canyon Slot to Capitol Reef National Park (where the Burr Scenic Backway would spit us out), but we were going for it!!
It ended up adding about 3 hours of total drive time to our day (OUCH), but the views were worth it!
Many folks who have visited Capitol Reef National Park will tell you how underrated it is, but I think very few people ever actually see this DEEP DEEP part of
the park where the Burr Trail Switchbacks are (opening clip in this video).
We did it in our minivan without a problem, but it is a bit intense, to say the least, so if switchbacks without guardrails freak you out, you probably should avoid this area.
After 40+ miles of driving in Capitol Reef at 15 mph over the washboard, we finally got to the Visitors' Center, and from there we had another 3 hours worth of driving to get back
home to Grand Junction, Colorado.
Detours can get a bit WILD sometimes, but when they are this SCENIC, it can feel impossible to say no!
PLEASE BRING EXTRA WATER, FOOD, and GAS if you plan to embark on this scenic backway.
If you break down, it’s unlikely someone will pass by and be able to help you in a reasonable amount of time. This is truly BACKCOUNTRY UTAH.
Would you take a 3-hour + detour for some epic, desolate, desert views?!
