In this Video Lecture, Professor Fink first reviews the dual nature of pain: pain perception and pain reaction. He describes the 2 pain pathways ["fast" (epicritic) pain involving Type A-delta noxiceptors and "slow" (protopathic) pain involving Type C noxiceptors]. He then describes factors affecting Pain Reaction. Professor Fink also identifies the differences between analgesics, local anesthetics and general anesthetics.
Professor Fink next describes the formation and actions of prostaglandins, including the role of cyclo-oxygenase (COX).
Professor Fink then presents the pharmacology of the Salicylate Non-Narcotic Analgesic & Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, including Aspirin (ASA), ibuprofen (Advil) and Celebrex (COX-2 Inhibitor).
Professor Fink then presents the Paraminophenol Non-Narcotic Analgesic Drugs (acetaminophen; Tylenol), and final compares and contrasts Aspirin with acetominophen.
