Pakistan successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable ballistic missile that can reach targets up to 1,300km (807 miles) away, the military said. Pakistan's Hatf-V, also known as the Ghauri, is a medium-range ballistic missile that could strike targets deep inside India. It is a liquid-fuel missile than can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads. The military said the purpose of the launch was to strengthen the country's deterrence capability. A statement released by the military described the test-fire as a training launch carried out by a strategic missile group of the Army Strategic Force Command.
Pakistan and India have been developing varying ranges of missiles since they both conducted nuclear tests in May of 1998. U.S. intelligence reports from last year estimate that Pakistan has developed 90 to 110 nuclear weapons. According to analysts, it is the fastest growing nuclear arsenal in the world. Pakistan is not a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
