Samsung SDI and Hyundai Motor have announced a groundbreaking collaboration in the electric vehicle (EV) battery sector. Under a seven-year contract starting in 2026, Samsung SDI will supply Hyundai with prismatic batteries for its EVs in Europe. This marks the first-ever partnership between the two Korean companies in the field of EV batteries.
Samsung SDI, a leading battery manufacturer, already serves clients such as General Motors, Stellantis, and BMW. The financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed, but industry insiders speculate that Samsung SDI could provide batteries for approximately 500,000 EVs during the contract period.
In addition to this collaboration, Samsung SDI recently revealed plans to invest $2 billion in a new EV battery facility in Indiana, in partnership with Stellantis. This facility is expected to commence battery production by 2027.
The batteries supplied to Hyundai will be the high-performance P6 variants from Samsung SDI's prismatic lineup. These batteries boast a 91% nickel-high NCA cathode and a silicon-based anode, offering exceptional energy density.
Furthermore, Samsung SDI and Hyundai are committed to expanding their joint research efforts, focusing on next-generation battery platforms. This collaboration aims to develop more efficient, longer-lasting, and potentially more affordable EVs in the future.
With Samsung SDI's expertise in battery manufacturing and Hyundai's position as a global vehicle manufacturer, this partnership holds great promise for the advancement of EV technology.
