Lesson 2: SAMBA DE RODA
Samba is the national dance of Brazil; it is celebrated worldwide as an energetic, polyrhythmic genre of music featuring fast footwork and flowing gestures. The roots of samba can be traced back to enslaved Africans that were brought to Salvador, Bahia, in the 19th century. Samba de roda, or the "Ring Samba", was a form of communal dance, worship, and celebration for Afro-Brazilians. the 'roda', is also the circle-space in which Capoeira, another Afro-Brazilian art form, is played. This lesson is an introduction to one variation of samba technique, as well as a brief culture and vocabulary lesson.
