Test for lesions affecting the femoral trochlear articular surfaces or the articular facets of the patella. Test for runners knee or Chondromalacia patellae.
The test is positive if the patient reports pain with movement of the patella upon contracting the quadriceps whilst pressure is applied. May also be considered positive if the patient is unable to complete the test due to anticipation of pain. The test is negative if after several attempts and changes to the pressure vector the patient reports no symptoms.
A positive test signifies degenerative changes to the patellofemoral articular surfaces, or chondromalacia patellae. The test is usually uncomfortable so it should be compared with the non affected side.
