(24 Jun 2014) The president of Iraq's ethnic Kurdish region said on Tuesday that "we are facing a new reality and a new Iraq" as the country considers new leadership for its Shiite-led government as an immediate step to curb a Sunni insurgency.
The comments by Kurdish regional President Massoud Barzani came as he met visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry, who is pushing the central government in Baghdad to adopt new policies that would give more authority to Iraq's minority Sunnis and Kurds.
Barzani said the current situation in Iraq requires "all concerned" to find a solution to the crisis in Iraq.
Kerry is hoping that support from Barzani will force Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to cede more power to Iraq's minorities and, in turn, soothe anger directed at Baghdad that has fuelled the insurgent Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Barzani's support is important because Kurds represent about 20 percent of Iraq's population and usually vote as a unified bloc.
