New York State is a massive place, with a population of around 19.5 million people. This huge number ranks it as the fourth most populous state in the entire United States. But here's a fact that might catch you off guard: a whopping 62% of these folks, which is well over half of the state's population, squeeze into a tiny area. This area makes up just about 4% of the state's total land area, tucked away in the southeastern corner.

This densely populated spot is none other than the world-renowned New York City. With the bulk of the population crammed into New York City, the vast remainder of New York State, despite its size, is relatively sparsely populated. This situation presents an interesting contrast, almost as if the majority of the state is whisper-quiet in comparison to the bustling city life.
