Single Coil METAL! Fender American Original 50's Stratocaster HIGH GAIN tones: Pure Vintage '59 pickups with Orange OR15 and Friedman PT112. Rock and roll!
Our favorite tones, without a doubt, come from this 50's Stratocaster plugged straight into an OR15 high gain. A good vintage style strat with a good high gain tube amp is truly something unique! Huge bass and high presence response, with crushing precision that is unlike anything you get from a humbucker. A frighteningly unforgiving, clear and complex sound that will amplify every scrape, ring and accent in your playing, all the while sounding extremely heavy! Dynamic is an understatement, as it will often go from very high gain to clean with pick attack alone.
And as for the noise? Well, a good vintage style strat has only a bit more noise than a copper shielded, perfectly wired, covered set of humbuckers. You can play ridiculous amounts of gain without a noise gate as long as your gear is working properly and your power is clean. Uncontrollable single coil noise with high gain is one of the biggest myths regarding electric guitars. Vintage strats do high gain. Just like any other properly working guitar.
Try it for yourselves, grab that single coil armed axe and plug it straight into that burly high gain machine! You need to feel this, we need more single coil high gain tones out there!
