Generation War is a 2013 German World War II television miniseries in three parts. It was commissioned by the public broadcasting organization ZDF, produced by the UFA subsidiary TeamWorx, and first aired in Germany and Austria in March 2013. The series tells the story of five German friends, aged around 20, on different paths through Nazi Germany and World War II: as Wehrmacht soldiers on the Eastern Front, a war nurse, an aspiring singer, and a Jewish tailor.

The series begins in 1941, as the five friends gather in Berlin before going separate ways:

Wilhelm (Volker Bruch), a level-headed, highly decorated officer, is off to the eastern front with his younger brother Friedhelm (Tom Schilling), a sensitive dreamer more interested in literature than warfare.
Charlotte (Miriam Stein), a young nurse, is also headed to the eastern front, where she hopes to serve her country and find adventure.
Greta (Karoline Herfurth), a talented singer, longs to become another Marlene Dietrich, but her Jewish boyfriend Viktor (August Diehl) is still reluctant to leave Germany.
As the war progresses, the five friends find themselves on different paths. Wilhelm and Friedhelm are both sent to the eastern front, where they experience the horrors of war firsthand. Charlotte witnesses the atrocities committed by the Nazis, and Greta is forced to make difficult choices in order to survive. Viktor, meanwhile, is forced to go into hiding after his parents are deported to a concentration camp.

The series follows the five friends as they experience the full horrors of World War II. They witness the deaths of their loved ones, the destruction of their country, and the collapse of their ideals. In the end, they are all changed by the war, and they must find a way to rebuild their lives in a world that has been shattered.

Generation War was a critical and commercial success in Germany. It was praised for its realistic portrayal of the war, its complex characters, and its emotional impact. The series has also been nominated for several awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
