I had a few hours between patients on a Friday around lunch, (at Academy Square Dental in Provo, UT) so I decided to practice my surgery hand skills. Turns out, our air compressor had just broken, so that was a nice coincidence since we wouldn't have been able to do any dentistry until a repair guy came later that afternoon.
A friend was using raw eggs to practice his surgery skills recently, keeping the inner membrane intact. He bet me lunch I couldn't peel an entire egg. It took me 9 tries to get the technique down for cracking and then slowly, slowly, slowly, peeling the shell away from the membrane, tiny pieces at a time. As I got about halfway through I used an intact half-shell from the first attempt as a cradle to hold it. This egg took me between 1 and 1.5 hours. I filmed as much as a could but had some camera trouble (batteries dying). Near the end, some of the other employees came back from lunch to see the end of it and help film, and even a family of patients got to see me pop it.
All the previous attempts, the membrane would begin to tear and leak if a sharp piece of the shell punctured it. Even this one formed a tiny tear right near the end, if I'd squeezed the egg AT ALL, it would have ruptured. It had a bit of slack to it and I could press it very gently. When I finally popped the membrane, all I did was lift up where the tear was and it opened.
Yes, I know I wasted a bunch of eggs, but for $1.50 to practice my handskills in a super awesome way, it was totally worth it, and I didn't have a good way to save them from spoiling there at the office anyway.
This was also my very first attempt at making an edited video. It's a learning process. I'll get better. - Dr. Christian Lassen
