STORYLINE:
In a couple of years, the Hungarian village of Alattyan would like to celebrate its 800th birthday with Nicolas Sarkozy, the favourite to win Sunday's presidential runoff in France.
Before leaving Hungary after World War II, Sarkozy's father, Pal, spent many summers in Alattyan at family estates in the 1930s and early 1940s.
While there are barely more than memories left of the Sarkozys in Alattyan, the family's history shows that Nicolas is far from the first of the line to dedicate himself to politics and public service.
His grandfather and great-grandfather, both named Gyorgy Sarkozy, were councilmen and deputy mayors in the nearby city of Szolnok.
During his term from the early 1920s until 1936, the grandfather gained renown for the large number of public development projects he fostered, including the construction of the city's theater and its main hotel, the Tisza Szallo.
Town historian Sandor Mosonyi said that the Sarkozys were an honest family.
"According to people here, they were popular folks because they were trustworthy, and paid their people on time, they helped people and gave housing to their permanent hired help. So they were honest folk," he said.
According to a book published in 1935 on the history of Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok County, which includes Alattyan, some 85 kilometres southeast of Budapest, the Sarkozys were granted nobility by King Ferdinand II in 1628.
County judges and vice-governors also can be found among Nicolas's ancestors as far back as the 18th and 19th centuries.
