The lower Puna eruption on Kilauea volcano's East Rift Zone began on May 3, 2018. Outbreaks of lava fountains shooting volcanic material up to 300 feet high, lava flows, and volcanic gas decimated the Leilani Estates subdivision. The volcanic activity was the most destructive in the United States since the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. By August 7th, 2018 more than 13.7 miles of land was covered by the lava flows. The official number of houses destroyed reached 700 on July 9th, 2018 with an estimated recovery of more than $800 million dollars.
These videos were taken in December 2022 at the request of a local resident and outside of any National Park or restricted airspace.
