STORYLINE:
The Consulate General of France in New York hosted a ceremony to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, the military operation that altered the course of World War II on Thursday.
Representatives from French and US armed forces as well as French and American war veterans, senior military officials, and foreign diplomats attended the event.
Acting Consul General of France in New York Damien Laban said in France, people are very aware that they owe their freedom and democracy to the American, British and other allied soldiers who fought under served to liberate them from the Nazi regime.
"They would never forget. France would never forget," said Laban.
Private First Class Edward Chan, who served as an Army Medic in World War II, also attended the event and said it's the events that save us.
