Socrates was an Ancient Greek philosopher. He was born in Athens in 469 BC and died in the same city in 399 BC. He is one of the founders of Greek philosophy. Information about Socrates' life and thoughts has survived through the writings of contemporary authors, his successors Plato and Xenophon, and the indirect accounts of Aristotle, who was born after Socrates' death.
Socrates usually expressed his philosophy in Socratic dialogues, which he analyzed in a question-and-answer style. These dialogues are a literary genre used to address philosophical issues. Socrates did not claim to be wise, on the contrary, he was known as someone who knew what he did not know. A famous incident is his visit to the Temple of Delphoi. When the temple priest said that there was no one wiser than him, Socrates questioned this information and laid the foundation of his philosophy.
Socrates was sentenced to death in Athens, accused of not believing in the gods and poisoning the youth. Plato's "Defense of Socrates" is a philosophical rebellion written after this trial.
