When women find themselves urinating more frequently than normal, it's probably because of one of two reasons.

Overactive bladder

A urinary tract infection (also known as a UTI)

Overactive bladder is a condition that's common to both men and women, and usually (though not always) happens as we age.

A urinary tract infection, however, happens to women much more often than men, and it can happen at any age. Research has found that 50 to 60 percent of women will have at least one in their lives. One-third of women will have one by their mid-20s that’s severe enough to require antibiotics.

A UTI occurs when bacteria enter the bladder through the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine from the bladder. Women get UTIs more often than men because their urethra is shorter. Bacteria have a shorter distance to travel to get to the bladder and start multiplying.

Causes of a urinary tract infection include the following.

* Poor hydration - not drinking enough water and other fluids.

* Holding your urine for prolonged periods, allowing bacteria more opportunity to grow.

* Improper wiping after a bowel movement. Going from back to front will expose the urethra to bacteria

* Irritation and inflammation in the vaginal area.

* Changes in the structure of the urinary system, as may happen during pregnancy

* Various other medical disorders and conditions, like diabetes, that affect the immune system.

The second biggest cause of frequent urination in women is an overactive bladder.

About 40 percent of all women will experience this condition during their lifetime. There are several causes for an overactive bladder. These can include:

* Disorders and diseases that affect muscles, nerves, and tissues, like diabetes.

* Estrogen deficiency during menopause.

* An injury.

* Obesity. This can cause extra pressure on the bladder.

Other causes of frequent urination in women can include bladder stones and weakened pelvic floor muscles.

Frequent urination is generally defined as

* The need to urinate at least eight times a day.

* Nocturia, or the need to urinate at least two or more times a night
