A bomb cyclone, also known as a bombogenesis or explosive cyclogenesis, is a type of intense winter storm that forms when there is a rapid drop in atmospheric pressure over a short period of time, typically 24 hours. This phenomenon is characterized by strong winds, heavy precipitation, and rough seas.
The term "bomb" refers to the rapidity of the pressure drop, not the storm's explosive power. To be classified as a bomb cyclone, the pressure must drop by at least 24 millibars (a unit of atmospheric pressure) in 24 hours.
Bomb cyclones can bring severe weather conditions, including:
Heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions
Strong winds, potentially leading to power outages
Coastal flooding and rough seas
Disruptions to transportation and daily activities
These storms can occur anywhere in the world but are most common in coastal regions of the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans.
