The anthrone reagent is an aromatic ketone.
Anthrone test is a general test for all carbohydrates.
In Anthrone test, carbohydrate gets dehydrated when reacted with conc. H2SO4 to form furfural derivative. This furfural reacts with anthrone to give bluish green coloured complex.

Anthrone reagent : dissolve 200 mg anthrone in 100ml of ice cold 95% sulphuric acid. Prepared freshly before use.

To 2ml of test solution in a test tube, added 1ml of anthrone reagent. A bluish green colour product is formed which is indicative of the presence of carbohydrates. This method can also be used for quantitatively analyse monosaccharides like glucose.
