This week we received a question about whether different discs should be used on carbon steel and stainless steel. As our Application Engineer Paul Gray explains, some abrasive manufacturers use a filler inside the discs which can cause corrosion on stainless steel. At Norton, we don't use this and as a result, all our cutting and grinding discs can be used on both metals. Be sure to check the disc for the material pictograms which show what metals the discs can be used on.
An important thing to remember, even with Norton abrasives, is not to use one disc for both metals as this will cause cross contamination and potential corrosion. Always use separate discs for each metal.
If you have a question to put to Paul, as always, pop it in the comments box below and we'll get back to you with an answer!
