Head and neck cancer is a fairly common cancer in the population. It usually comes from chronic tobacco or alcohol exposure, but there's also other reasons to develop head and neck cancer. Head and neck cancer can occur in the oral cavity, the lips, tongue, teeth, the jaw. It really alters a person's ability to speak. Can alter a person's ability to breathe. It can alter a person's ability to eat or drink. It really does rob a person of vital function and who they are as a person. When it comes to how I treat my cancer patients, I treat them with the knowledge and expertise of having treated many patients over many years and using that experience and expertise to really guide them. What makes my practice a little different is that I'm an independent practice. Although, I'm academically affiliated, I have no alliance with any particular system, which means I can put together the best team possible to really suit your needs. Whether it's a chemotherapy doctor, a radiation doctor, a therapist, whatever it needs, I can connect you to everybody that will give you the best outcome.
When I set out to treat head and neck cancer, I really want it to be able to provide my patients with the best possible care. I created something called the Virtual Tumor Board. The Virtual Tumor Board really seeks to simplify the coordination of your cancer care by connecting you to providers in different specialties, to make sure that you get the best access at the right time. The utility of the Virtual Tumor Board was that there was no single system that owned it. Patients can get second, third opinions from experts all over the country, affiliated with different academic institutions.
I decided that it was really important that patients have that access to multiple opinions and the best providers, no matter what cancer it is that they have. Even though I've seen cancer thousands of times, that one patient's only seen cancer at that one time, and they really need to understand what the process of treatment and what the road to recovery and cure is. That's what makes my practice different. You're not just a name on a patient census. You're a patient that my staff knows by first name. We're there to provide all the services that you need from medical, to social, to everything that you'll need in one place.
