On May 1, 2011, thousands of Armenians, Jews and human rights activists joined with political leaders in commemorating the Armenian Genocide and marking Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) at a special Times Square observance.
The two-hour program included remarks by Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY), Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Representatives Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Anthony Weiner (D-NY) with the presentation of a proclamation by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg honoring the occasion.
Representatives of the Armenian American and Jewish American communities offered remarks about the importance of vigilance in properly commemorating and preventing genocide.
The annual observance was organized by the Mid-Atlantic chapters of the Knights & Daughters of Vartan and cosponsored by the AGBU, Armenian Assembly, Armenian National Committee of America, Armenian Council of America, and ADL-Ramgavars. Participating Organizations included: The Prelacy of the Armenian Church, the Diocese of the Armenian Church, Armenian Missionary Association of America, Armenian Catholic Eparchy for U.S. and Cnada, Mid-Atlantic ACYOA, AYF, Armenian Youth Organizations, Arenian University and Collegue Clubs.
