During that time new gods and new stories have been added to Greek mythology. The mythology depicts gods in human form and they behaved very similar like humans.
In contrast to other religions which were dictated by prophecies and special revelations, Greek mythology is more about the lives of gods and heroes. According to the myth, the gods chose their home as Mount Olympus. Mount Olympus is located in the region called Thessaly. Here, they created a society and ranked themselves according to authority and power.
The gods were free to roam the earth when they wanted. While Olympus was home to many Greek gods, there were 12 main gods who were referred to as the Olympians. Their names were Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Hephaestus, Hermus, Demeter, Aphrodite, Hestia, Poseidon, Athena, Artemis and Ares.
The Greeks believed that the gods controlled every area of life and were responsible for their well -being. Humans and gods shared a relationship often, in friendship and love. The gods were known for punishing people who displayed bad behavior.
The reason why Greek myths are so popular is because they were once very intricately woven into the very lives of the people. The people learned about their gods and heroes through word of mouth through poets and stories.
The stories and poems helped in passing down the mythology from one generation to another. There are also archaeological resources which have helped to develop Greek mythology. The literary and archaeological sources together prove that many of the stories or legends may be rooted in factual events.
