King George III was the longest serving King of England and his reign from 1760 to 1820 was one of the most eventful. A patron of the arts and sciences, he appointed Allan Ramsay as Principal Painter in Ordinary to the Court. This portrait shows the King in his coronation robes; it is one of the numerous replicas issued by the studio of Ramsay of the coronation portrait Ramsay painted in 1761. The King commissioned the royal portraits to be given to ambassadors and colonial governors and many of these paintings found their way to Britain’s newly acquired colonial territories.
Chairman’s Message
Bendigo Art Gallery acquired this significant work from a generous benefactor under the condition that the painting be displayed in the Bendigo Law Courts, where it hung for almost 20 years. The painting deteriorated during that time, and has not been seen by the public since it was returned to the Gallery.
Bendigo Art Gallery would like to undertake conservation on this important painting. Extensive conservation is required to stabilise the work and to repair the paint losses and also the frame.
