The Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage that has been performed for hundreds of years by pilgrams from around the world to see the final resting place of Saint John the Baptist in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, North West Spain. After reaching the cathedral, it is traditional for many pilgrims to continue their journey to the most Western point of the Galician coast called Finisterre.
Long before the discovery of the remains of Saint John, Fisterra was an important site for the pagan religion as it was believed to be the most Westerly point of Europe and thus where the world ended - hence the name Finisterre or "end of the earth". Pagans would make the pilgrimage to watch the sun set into the sea and pay homage to the gods of the sun and sea. To this day, this area of coast is still referred to as the "Costa de le Muerte" or "the coast of death" as it was believed to be the place where the Sun went to "die".
