New Amsterdam Travel Video- Sinterklaas is a big holiday in The Netherlands, especially for children. On December 5th, as legend has it, Saint Nicholas, an older, white bearded man wearing red and gold, rides his horse, Amerigo over the rooftops while his helpers go down the chimneys to deliver presents to good boys and girls. To celebrate, people read poems, sing songs and exchange gifts. But Sinterklaas actually arrives a few weeks earlier in November by boat from Spain (originally Turkey) with his helpers, known as Zwarte Pieten (Black Petes) or Rote Pieten (Sooty Petes). In Amsterdam Sinterklaas travels up the Amstel River and through the canals to the Maritime Museum. There he gets on his horse and everyone parades through town, this year to Dam Square. Join Gessell and see the colorful costumes, the fun boats, cute floats and of course, Sinterklaas himself. Be good boys and girls or Sinterklaas will put you in a sack and take you back to Spain.
