Have you wondered what the gardens of Buckingham Palace look like? Wonder no more.
On this day in 2001, ITN's cameras were allowed to film the royal grounds when it was announced that the gardens would be opened to the public during the summer. In the last 20 years of her reign, Queen Elizabeth II hosted a number of garden parties for members of the public, and members of the public who paid for tours of the palace's State Rooms were also given the chance to stroll through a section of the gardens.
Covering roughly 40 acres, the gardens of Buckingham Palace include a helicopter pad, a lake, a tennis court, as well as over 1000 trees, 325 different species of wild plant, and 30 species of birds.
