You know how people are always sharing their "unboxing" videos of stuff like new computer hardware or new cameras? Well, I think it's about time to share an unboxing of some awesome muscle-car parts! (Yes, I am that much of a car-geek.) This is the 2nd in a series of videos wherein I tear open the crate for new performance parts going into my 1968 Chevelle. This time around, it's a brand-new Tremec T-56 Magnum 6-speed Hurst transmission.
If you're as big a car-geek as I am, you probably want to see some specs on this transmission conversion kit:
* Tremec T-56 Magnum 6-speed transmission, rated at 700 lb-ft of torque
* 2.97:1 first gear ratio (not sure about the original Saginaw, but it's probably similar)
* 2.10:1 second
* 1.46:1 third
* 1.00:1 fourth (same ratio as the stock Saginaw in 4th)
* 0.74:1 fifth (overdrive)
* 0.50:1 sixth (double-overdrive)
* QuickTime SFI-approved scattershield (in place of the stock bellhousing)
* Hurst T-56 Magnum hydraulic throwout-bearing kit
* Custom-length Inland Empire NHRA-approved 1026 drawn-tubing driveshaft
* Needle-roller pilot bearing
* Associated hardware, hoses, speedometer cable, and electronics
* Energy Suspension polyurethane transmission mount
* White 6-speed Hurst shift knob
* 6-speed center-console plate
* Sheet-metal tunnel patch
This replaces the stock Saginaw 4-speed (not the celebrated Muncie) that's in there now, which is really only a 2-1/2 speed with marginally useful reverse. Going from a 1:1 ratio in fourth gear to 0.5:1 ratio for 6th will literally cut highway RPMs in HALF! That translates into WAY less fuel consumption and wear-and-tear on the 396 engine - and lots less noise.
