Another rough turning video, as this punky piece of spalted red alder was hiding quite a bit of moisture in the middle of it.
This particular piece of wood gave me a lot of problems for a first turning. The end grain was horrible and very porous, much of the outer wood was incredibly soft and punky in places, and that “hidden” moisture within (which my reader didn’t pick up until I was hogging out the bowl) was causing issues as well when I had to step away.
In the end…with persistence, CA glue, dish soap, and simply removing lots of material…I was able to finish with a decent, spalted salad bowl blank. Once stabilized, the second turning should go much smoother. There will still be a ton of sanding however, thanks to that darn end grain. 😉
Anyhow, hope you enjoy the video…and how I work my way thru things. Just a beginner/newcomer to wood turning, but I’m always pushing myself to improve…always learning and experimenting. Thanks again for watching. 👍
