Bantar Gebang is the largest landfill in Indonesia. Everyday, more than 7,000 tons of waste from across the capital Jakarta were dumped at this 110-hectare dumpsite that is located in Bekasi, West Java.
Established in 1986, the open dumping system has created mountains of trash as high as 40 meters. Bantar Gebang is predicted to overload in 2021.
It attracts thousands of scavengers from across the country, simply because it provides source of income where unemployment is rather high. One of the scavengers is a 40-year old man named Ranto, who migrated from Cirebon, West Java to Bantar Gebang in the 1990s.
I shot this video while reporting on the medical waste story.
