We’ve been getting away with academic murder. Whether voluntary or involuntary, whether we are an accessory or the accused, we have all contributed to this heinous crime, and the number of victims is growing at an alarming rate. We won’t find the solution to this problem in research or data. The solution can be found when we begin to listen to the voices of the victims, the students, who tell us how we can put an end to this lawful, oftentimes premeditated killing of the education system.
Latoya Lewis has been a teacher since 2004. From 2004 - 2011, she taught all levels of high school English in Title 1 schools, or schools where there is a high percentage of children from low income families. She began teaching in the Developmental English department at Lone Star College-Tomball in 2008 and now leads the Associate of Arts in Teaching Program, where she is preparing future teachers to change the landscape of education.
