lake mead, drying up lake mead
The importance of Lake Mead was never in question, since well over 20 million people depend on it for drinking water and power. Unfortunately, this important reservoir is alarmingly #drying up.
Recent changes in the world's climate have caused water bodies to shrink, and now #LakeMead is joining the list of significant river sources that are drying up. But there is seemingly more than just what can be seen going on with the lake's level dropping quickly.
So, come with us as we look into the real reasons why Lake Mead is drying up and what this could mean for the dozens of states and millions of people who depend on it.
The Hoover Dam on the Colorado River created Lake #Mead, which is the largest reservoir in the United States. It is in both Nevada and Arizona and gives electricity to hundreds of thousands of people in those states. Due to the drought in the western U.S., it is quickly getting close to the dead pool level. This summer, the lake's water level was about 1,040.71 feet (ca. 317 meters), which was the lowest it had been since the 1930s.
One of the main things that affects how much water is in Lake Mead is how much rain or snow falls. It changes with the seasons because the snow from the Rocky Mountains melts in the winter and flows down into the valley. But because of climate change, it is getting harder to predict how the weather will change from season to season. So, even though the water level has gone up recently, the lake is only 27 percent full.
