When young children find guns there are often tragic consequences. Raymond Miltenberger has been doing research for over a decade to figure out how to keep kids safe from guns. One solution is to teach safety skills to children. Raymond Miltenberger is a Professor at the University of South Florida where he directs the graduate programs in Applied Behavior Analysis.
Received his bachelor’s degree in 1978 from Wabash College and his PhD in clinical psychology in 1985 from Western Michigan University. He completed a predoctoral internship in behavioral pediatrics at the Kennedy Institute of the Johns Hopkins University Medical School. Currently, he is a professor and the director of the undergraduate program, master’s degree program, and doctoral degree program in Applied Behavior Analysis. \Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award, The Western Michigan University Distinguished Alumnus Award, the North Dakota State University Distinguished Professor Award, and the ABAI Outstanding Mentorship Award. Dr. Miltenberger’s research on safety skills investigates teaching strategies to help keep children safe from such threats as loaded firearms, abduction, and sexual abuse. His research shows that typical instructional strategies are not effective – telling kids and showing kids what to do is not enough.
