During the Second World War, most of the countries which were involved in the conflict committed war crimes. One of the most sadistic and formidable groups tasked with committing war crimes for Nazi Germany and the Third Reich was the Einsatzgruppen. This was an infamous group of soldiers who followed the regular German Army as they made territorial gains. The Einsatzgruppen then rounded up civilians in the local areas before carrying out huge massacres. It's estimated that the group killed around 2 million innocent people.
One commander of the Einsatzgruppen was Paul Blobel, who was a First World War veteran. He joined the Nazi Party and then rose to prominence during the Second World War before becoming a leader within the SS. As the Germans invaded the Soviet Union with Operation Barbarossa, Blobel was placed in charge of an Einsatzgruppen division tasked with killing civilians in Ukraine. It was estimated that during his time in command, Blobel was responsible personally for around at least 60,000 deaths and in fact one massacre the Babi Yar Massacre saw 33,000 people killed in days.
Blobel was instrumental in these massacres, however was relieved of command due to his alcoholism and then began to work to conceal Nazi war crimes. He was captured after the Second World War and then placed on trial in the Einsatzgruppen Trials. For his crimes he was sentenced to death and then executed at Landsberg Prison, the same Prison Adolf Hitler was held in following the failed Munich Putsch.
