The term Graphic Novel was coined in the 1970s to refer to a new kind of comic book: actual comic BOOKS. These were stand-alone, non-serialized comic works that didn't restrain themselves to the usual twenty-something pages of the typical newsstand publications. With time, this kind of work has grown into an industry of its own, providing creators with an outlet not always available through the bigger publishers and showing just how varied, complex, and truly amazing the medium can be.
