In Canada, the combustion of transportation fuels (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and fuel oil) accounts for about 28% of Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To meet Canada’s net-zero commitments, these fuels — and potentially the vehicles they serve — will need to be replaced with zero-emission energy carriers and vehicles, with significant implications for oil-producing Alberta.
Moderated by Carolina Calderon, Director of Policy, Planning, and External Relations for PrairiesCan and featuring Dr. David Layzell, Dr. Alex de Barros, and Zachary Redick of the University of Calgary, this presentation begins with a high level assessment of the net-zero solutions for Canada’s transportation sector, with a focus on the role that hydrogen could play. A case study follows on the transition to net-zero of Alberta’s heavy duty road freight sector.
