Born into a family of circus artists, Semiha Yankı performed as a circus acrobat in her childhood and youth. After her brother, a tightrope walker, died in an accident while performing, she left the circus and switched to music.

In 1975 she represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Seninle bir dakika ("One minute with you"). In the Turkish preliminary decision, there was a tie between Seninle bir dakika and Delisin (English: "You're crazy"), which was sung by the girl band "Cici Kızlar", which was very successful in Turkey at the time. The subsequent draw between the two songs made Semiha Yankı the first representative of Turkey at the competition by luck.

In Stockholm, she finished last in Turkey's ESC debut with just 3 points from Monaco. Turkey received so little points probably because of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus the year before. Turkey is the only country in the world that acknowledges North Cyprus as a state. After all, they occupied and conquered the territory, and this conflict remains until the present day.

After the contest, she has continued to release several singles and studio albums and remains one of the most popular performers in her home country.
