Joe Sacco presents an illustrated account of first day of the World War I conflict, the Battle of the Somme. The author recounts the battle, in which close to 20,000 British soldiers were killed and approximately 40,000 wounded, as one, twenty-four foot-long panorama. The black and white drawing encompasses all of July 1, 1916, in Northern France, as British forces prepared and went to war against Germany. Joe Sacco speaks at Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington, D.C.
