KTM Two-Stroke Oil Change – Cycle News
A KTM Two-Stroke oil change is an easy task and helps keep your KTM two-stroke shifting smoothly. Fresh oil also helps your clutch work consistently and last longer.
Since there are no oil filters or screens to change and clean in the two-stroke oil system, the task is a quick affair and requires minimal tools. You only need to drain the oil out and put oil back in—plain and simple.
A KTM Two-Stroke oil change is easiest with a warm engine, so fire it up and ride the bike around at low speeds so the clutch and engine can heat the oil. Warm oil will drain more quickly and thoroughly.
With the bike on level ground and with the bike secured upright (an elevated shop stand is awesome for this, but leaning a bike against a wall works, too), remove the oil filler cap. This makes the oil drain easier.
Next, grab your t-handle or ratchet and socket and remove the drain plug. Make sure you have a drain pan ready to catch the draining oil. If you warmed up your engine before you started your KTM two-stroke oil change, WARNING: the engine oil can be very hot.
While you’re letting the oil drain, clean any metal shavings off the magnetic drain plug. A little bit of metal here is perfectly normal. When the oil has finished draining, replace the crush washer on the drain bolt and reinstall, tightening to the proper torque of 20 Nm or 14.8 ft.lbs.
Next, grab the oil recommended in your owner’s manual and pour it into the engine with the help of a funnel. Most full-size KTM Two-Strokes will take .8 Liters of oil at an oil change.
After the oil is filled, put the filler cap back on and hand-tighten. Then, take a pair of large pliers and tighten the filler cap a little more. This will ensure the cap can’t be inadvertently kicked or knocked loose while riding. The filler cap is rubber, so there’s little chance of stripping.
