President Donald Trump says he's 'ready to close' the border if Congress doesn't change America's immigration laws. 'I'm ready to close it, if I have to close it,' he told reporters on Tuesday in the Oval Office. Trump complained that the U.S. has the 'worst, dumbest immigration system in the world,' and he said he's lobbying congressional Democrats to change it. Specifically, he wants them to end the 'catch and release' policy that allows illegal immigrants to roam freely in the U.S. while they wait for their cases to be adjudicated by immigration judges. That can take years, based on the backlog. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have proposed the hiring of more judges to reduce the wait period. But Trump has rejected their spending requests and argued on Tuesday, 'We have to get rid of judges.' 'If we don't make a deal with Congress, the border's going to be closed, 100 percent,' he insisted. 'Then we're going to close the border, that's going to be it.' He immediately amended the statement to say that it could be large portions of the border and not every legal port of entry. 'Sure, it's gonna have a negative impact on the economy,' he told a reporter asking about the risks. 'But to me, trading is very important, the borders are very important ... but we're gonna he security in this county. That's more important than trade.'
