Radu Melu, National Coordinator of the Forest Department at WWF Romania: “The difference between deforestation and illegal logging is as follows: when deforestation takes place, the forest will never grow on that land again. It may be because of a highway, of a mall or a pasture or of a meadow. The forest will never grow in that area again. In case of illegal logging, nature often forgives us and regenerates itself. And forests grow again. The problem with illegal logging in Romania is that, wherever it takes place, biodiversity is disturbed. And these disturbances are often irreversible”.
WWF and nearly 200 other NGOs have long advocated for EU legislation on deforestation through the #Together4Forests campaign and will continue to fight for a law that can make a real change. All eyes are now on EU governments and the European Parliament to deliver ambitious results.
