A Hopkins High School cheerleader is accused of trafficking a younger teammate for sex.
Montia Parker, 18, of Maple Grove is charged with felony sex trafficking and promoting prostitution. Police say she set up a Backpage.com advertisement for a 16-year-old sophomore and drove the girl to meet clients.
Court documents state that back in March, the younger girl talked about wanting to make money. Parker allegedly asked if she would be willing to have sex for money. The younger girl replied she would give oral sex for money. Parker then created the online ad.
On March 5 and 6, Parker pulled the 16-year-old out of school to meet with clients who responded to the ad. The first day, she took the girl to an apartment in Crystal, where the girl had oral sex with a man for $60. Parker deposited all the money into her own bank account without giving any to the girl.
The next day, they went to a home in Brooklyn Park, where a man there wanted to have intercourse with the girl. When she refused, Parker allegedly said, "I didn't drive up here for nothing, and eventually you will need to have sex."
A few days later, the younger girl's mother called police after finding text messages exchanged between the girls that referenced prostitution.
Hopkins Public Schools told 12 News that when police notified the district what was going on, Parker was permanently removed from school.
The district released a statement saying, "Although these events did not occur on school grounds, the charges are very serious. When we learned of them, we acted immediately to ensure the safety of all Hopkins High School Students."
Police and court documents refer to the 16-year-old in this case as purely a victim. Not only did it appear she was coerced into prostitution, but her mother told police the girl also has developmental cognitive delay.
Minnetonka Police Chief Mark Raquet told 12 News it is very rare to hear about young people trafficking other young people. e said in his 28 years at the department, six of which were spent as police liaison for Hopkins High School, he has never dealt with anything quite like this until now.
Parker is due back in court next Wednesday.
