Japan and the Philippines, two of the closest Asian allies of the United States (US), on July 8, signed a key defence pact dubbed Reciprocal Access Agreement – which among other things would facilitate deep cooperation in the military front between the two nations. The agreement could be seen by China as a possible provocation given the rising tensions and confrontations with Manila in the South China Sea. The deal, the first of its kind to be signed by Japan in Asia, would take effect after ratification by both countries' legislatures.
