God Does Not Show Favoritism
Acts 10: 34-48
1. Introduction
- We have seen how God used visions to tell Peter, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.”
- Gradually God was changing Peter, removing his racial prejudice and his resistance to change.
- Peter’s experience in Acts 10 was re-told twice in Acts. This is to show emphatically the point that salvation is for everyone.
- Do we have some hidden prejudice or bias that make us consider someone beyond God's salvation?
2. Peter Spoke
- “God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.” (vs 34)
- Peter testified concerning Jesus’ ministry, His death, His resurrection, and the apostles being witnesses commanded to preach what they saw (vs 35-42)
- “Everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name” (vs 43)
3. The Holy Spirit Poured Out
- While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message (vs 44)
- The circumcised believers present were astonished (vs 45)
- The Holy Spirit had been poured out on Gentiles, and they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God (vs 46)
4. Gentiles Baptized into One Body
- “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water.” (vs 47)
- Since they have received the Holy Spirit just as the other believers, who are we to reject any of them? (vs 47)
- So they were baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. (vs 48)
5. Concluding Remarks
- Every time I reflect on the story of Peter and Cornelius, I just have to worship God.
- Through miracles, visions and mighty works of the Holy Spirit, God broke through the racial barrier and brought Gentiles into the Church.
- The Church is for everyone, of all races and backgrounds.
