It wasn’t supposed to end this way. When the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon bowed in 2018 boasting 840 horsepower, that was supposed to be it, the ultimate Challenger, the bookend to this modern chapter of muscle-car history.

But then came the pandemic, a merger of Dodge’s parent company, and several other such upsets, and suddenly Dodge found itself with more time to tinker. More budget for “special projects.” More reason to stuff more horsepower into one more bookend model.

That model is the 2023 Dodge Challenger Demon 170, a 1,025-horsepower E85-ethanol-gulping purpose-built drag-machine the automaker calls “the new pinnacle of factory-crazy.” It pulls sub-9.0-second quarter-mile times. It deploys a parachute to slow down. And at wide-open throttle, it empties its gas tank in about six minutes.

The 2018 Challenger Demon was absolutely ridiculous. The 2023 Challenger Demon 170 is a cartoon caricature come to life.
