(6 Jan 2019) A large crowd including the Ukranian President Petro Poroshenko has watched a few daring Orthodox Christians brave cold waters in Istanbul to mark Epiphany, the baptism of Jesus Christ.
The swimmers battled it out to retrieve a wooden cross which had been thrown in the murky waters of the Bosporous by a Patriarch on Sunday.
The traditional cross-throwing event was also held in other cities across Turkey and in other countries including Greece and Cyprus.
