First-time misdemeanor offenders are almost always given the option for a plea bargain that includes a suspended sentence. A suspended sentence is a way to stay out of jail, as long as you abide by the terms of the plea bargain, such as paying a fine, completing community service, attended counseling or drug rehab, passing drug tests, and avoiding any new arrests.
However if the defendant fails to complete all the conditions of their plea bargain, they will be remanded to jail by the judge, and their suspended sentence will be revoked.
