How much should you swing on your volleys?
Should you punch at the ball?
These are questions we get asked very often, and so many players struggle to really master their volleys in tennis.
Tennis is a game of time, and when we attack the net, we're taking time away from our opponent, but we're also taking time away from ourselves.
To hit solid volleys in tennis, it's important to understand the swings you should use on your forehand volley and your backhand volley, and that's why we've made this volley lesson.

Less is More
When it comes to hitting effective, solid volleys in tennis, less is more. Many players struggle to hit good volleys because their swings are way too big, which causes issues with timing the volley effectively.
Shortening your backswings will make it much easier for you to time the contact point out in front of your body. Remember, when you're at the net, you have roughly half the time that you normally would on the baseline.
The distance from your opponent to you is cut drastically, so the ball reaches you much faster. It's very important to be aware of this and act accordingly.

Think Feet, Not Hands
Great volleyers cover the net with ease, and a big part of that comes down to the footwork patterns they use. Try to step out with the outside foot, and step into the ball with the inside foot. On the forehand volley, for a right-handed tennis player, this would mean you're stepping out initially with your right foot, then stepping into the volley with your left foot.

Where To Aim?
In general, you'll hit your first volley around the service line or just inside the boxes. It's hard to finish the point from there, so it's a good idea to plan for two volleys. Use the first volley as a second approach shot, and mainly aim that first volley down the line or down the middle of the court.
Then with the second volley, close down on the net and use the width of the court to end the point.
