STORYLINE
More than two dozen gay couples said "I do" at a mass wedding in Mexico City on Sunday (14JULY2013).
Twenty-six couples took part in the ceremony, surrounded by friends and family.
Some couples opted for the traditional white dress, others wore their Sunday best, but all wore big smiles as they were declared married.
After the ceremony the couples each had to sign a marriage certificate to legalise their unions.
Currently, the only place in Mexico where same-sex marriage is legal is in the capital.
Mexico City's groundbreaking same-sex marriage law, enacted in 2010, extends to wedded gay couples the right to adopt children, to jointly apply for bank loans, to inherit wealth and to be covered by their spouses' insurance policies.
Francisco Javier Osuna, who married his partner on Sunday, said that the weddings gave people the chance to see that gay people "have the right to the same rights as heterosexual people."
Gay rights have made some advances in Mexico as a whole, with the Supreme Court ruling in favour of gay couples adopting and requiring that same-sex marriages performed in Mexico City be recognised in the rest of the country.
Same-sex marriage is already legal in more than a dozen nations worldwide.
